What is the i-Plus?
The i-Plus is an examination taken by some school pupils in their last year.
The quality i-Plus test is considered world-class across the globe and around the country.
There can be up to four different “disciplines” used for the i-Plus tests – Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, Maths and English. The combination of test papers varies considerably around the country.
The content of the I-plus exam varies between different areas of the country but generally, it will focus on a combination of the following four subjects:
- English
- Maths
- Verbal reasoning
- Non-verbal reasoning/spatial awareness
Although the English and maths tests tend to follow the National Curriculum, the verbal and non-verbal reasoning/spatial awareness tests are not school-based subjects and will not be taught as part of the curriculum in state schools. Therefore your child is likely to need additional support and practice to familiarise themselves with verbal and non-verbal reasoning/spatial awareness exam question types.
There are two different formats for I-Plus exam papers:
- Standard format - where children write their answers on the test paper.
- Multiple-choice format – where answers are marked in a separate answer booklet
I-plus exam papers are timed and usually last till whatever time the school decides it to be. Children should practise with timed I-plus mock test papers, as well as work through the non-timed practice, so they can see what they are able to do within a given time frame.
There are two main exam boards for the I-Plus exam:
- GCSE – The General Certificate of Secondary Education is an academic qualification in a range of particular subjects, taken in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and private schools within Scotland as well.
- A level – A-Levels (Advanced Level qualifications) is a UK subject-based qualification for students aged 16 and above. They are usually studied over two years, leading to qualifications recognised for entrance to higher education institutes in the UK and many others worldwide.
There are always more students than good colleges for them to aim for. It is therefore vital to find out how the I-plus exam is structured where you live and to prepare students adequately.
